Week 18: Invention, Intellectual Property and Income

What I would like for this stool is for people to be able to reproduce it and record/play their own sounds. So, after looking at what other students did in the previous years I read through the Creative Commons licences website and FAQ's. I found that it is possible to licence it with 'some rights reserved'. This is ideal for me because it means that there are restrictions and specifications on how the product can be modified and used, but with ample flexibility for the project to be developed by others on the way. An explanation of the options available can be found in the images below.

So in the end I used the Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) licence because I would like people to be able to reproduce my design but also reference me when they do. I also would not like my stool or any modifications to be used for commercial gain. I would like to keep it open source!

Above you can see what I chose for my stool. The license is very easy to arrange giving one the choice to copy the html content and post it directly on a personal website. There is also the instruction on how to credit on digital pdf files and also hard-copy documents.

I am also planning to organize an exhibition and a seminar regarding FabLabs when I return to Cyprus, where I will showcase the stool and all other weekly projects I completed during the Academy. The goal is to spread the word about open source design, the Fab vision, Fab Cities and the Fab Academy in particular, because I am one of the first (if not the first) Cypriot who has taken the course and I strongly believe that the maker movenment needs to be empowered on the island. I plan to directly involve my School in the event and invite other makers who are slowly making an appearance on the island, so we can benefit from each-other's experiences.
